What Is AtlasBear.com?

After completing Our Green Year, we were looking for another way that we could learn more about the environment, and help others learn more about the environment as well. Blogging about a new green tip we implemented in our lives for 365 days was a good start, but there is so much more in regards to the environment than just going green in the home with small solutions.

AtlasBear.com is meant to be a one-stop shop of green ideas and information. Here you will find interviews with noted green personalities, news from the environment, more green tips, extinction and global warming alerts, pictures, projects and videos about going green and the environment.

If you have a question about going green or the environment, AltasBear.com is here to answer it. We are a collective resource for people to learn and teach about the environment.

Why Atlas Bear?

While it may seem odd to call a website devoted to environmental information Atlas Bear, we have a reason for

A Roman Mosiac of an Atlas Bear

choosing this name. It was important that we chose a name that was not only unique, but also served as a metaphor for the growing environmental troubles we are all finding ourselves in.

The Atlas Bear was the only native bear to the continent of Africa, the home of big mammals. Located in the Atlas Mountains of northwestern Africa, it was smaller than a black bear. Feeding primarily on nuts, acorns and roots it was stronger and thicker than the black bear.

Sadly, long before anyone thought of extinctions or global warming, this bear was hunted not for food, but simply for sport. During the days of the Roman Empire, thousands of these bears were hunted and taken to the Empire to be used in the games where they would be attacked by gladiators and slaves for the delight of the masses. It eventually went extinct in 1870 when the last one was probably hunted and shot, although uncomfirmed reports say there may be some left, but this is not likely.

We chose the name Atlas Bear because it represents our willful destruction of the environment for our own purposes. People throw out garbage because they are too lazy to find a trash can. People drive everywhere because they don’t want to walk. People contribute to greenhouse gases because they don’t want to change. Our environmental problems are because of our own selfishness, and our selfishness killed off the Atlas Bear.

We thought that the Atlas Bear may be gone, but at least its name can be used to help other animals in their struggle to survive in a world of rising temperatures, shrinking habitats and disrupted eco-systems.
