On April 22, 2008, Craig and Layla Baird made the choice to do something unique to help the environment. While many have decided to make green changes in their lives, Craig and Layla decided to go one step further, by doing something green every single day for an entire year.
Doing a new green task every single day was not an easy task for Craig and Layla. it required a lot of work, a lot of research and a lot of time. However, even with that work, it was something they were both happy to do as the environment is very important to both of them. They did not start Our Green Year for profit or fame, but just to educate themselves and help others learn about the ways that they can also help the environment.
Over the course of those 365 days, Craig and Layla were able to lower their carbon footprint by over 80 percent, save over 100,000 gallons of water and provide money to several environmental organizations. They were also able to cut their energy consumption greatly, reduce their driving by over half and decrease their garbage output to one or two bags a month.
Over the course of going green for an entire year for Our Green Year, Craig and Layla learned a great deal about the environment and how we can all help it. Some of the tips they offered were odd, out of the box and unique, and some were mainstream, but all had the common goal of helping the environment by reducing waste and greenhouse gases.
During the course of Our Green Year, Craig and Layla message of green living was also spread through the media they appeared in. Some of the media they appeared in include The Province newspaper, The Edmonton Journal, CBC Edmonton News, Shaw TV and Global Edmonton News
While Our Green Year may be over as of April 22, 2009, it is far from being the end of their green lifestyle changes.
